A waterfront district in the inner city
Construction of the Vuosaari Harbour will completely transform the inner city. All cargo port operations will be transferred from the West and Sörnäinen harbours to Vuosaari. Railway carriage operations will also cease in Keski-Pasila. These measures will free seven kilometres of shoreline and a large piece of land next to the second largest train terminus in Finland. Helsinki is faced with changes on a magnitude that has not been seen there for more than a century.
Planning for the replacement of Sörnäinen Harbour and Hanasaari with Kalasatama is already in progress. Kalasatama will be planned for 18 000 residents and 10 000 jobs. Floor area is 1 350 000 m2 in total.
Questions that still require solutions include:
- How should the new district look?
- For whom is the new area being planned?
- What is the relationship between the different social and age groups?
- What ratio will there be of working to living spaces?
- To what extent can public transport be used?
- Should parking space and apartments be separate, so that apartments do not automatically include reserved parking?
- Since small shops and other services vitalise an environment, how are we to attract them to set up on the ground floors of residential buildings?
We are open to dialogue and to a discussion with all concerned parties about these and any other questions concerning the Kalasatama project.
