Koivusaari International Ideas Competition 12 August - 10 November 2008
The City of Helsinki organises, in co-operation with the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA), an open international ideas competition on the planning of Koivusaari Island.
The competition is open to all. The competition languages are Finnish and English. The entrants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary planning groups with a wide range of expertise on land use, landscape planning, traffic technology, municipal engineering, and construction and energy engineering.
The competition is organised in order to prepare the component master plan for Koivusaari Island. The objective of the competition is to produce innovative plan alternatives which can serve as a basis for further planning and drafting of the component master plan and to identify the essential features of this new district which will have a maritime atmosphere and an underground railway connection.
Before the jury panel makes its decision the entries will be publicly displayed. If necessary, a second stage will be arranged.
Prizes of the first stage of the competition totalling 110,000 euros will be distributed as follows:
- 1st prize 40,000 euros
- 2nd prize 30,000 euros
- 3rd prize 20,000 euros
- two purchases, of 10,000 euros each

The information about scale model can be found in dwg-files. - The scale model will be embedded in the competition organizer's environmental model. - The limits of the scale model are specified in the dwg-file. - The bottom plate of the model is 2 mm smaller than the competition area. - The bottom level of the plate is -20.0 m (thickness of the bottom plate being 10 mm) and the sea level +0,0 m.
Seminar for the entrants
A seminar on the competition was arranged on 1 September 2008 at 15.00 in the auditorium of the city planning office of Helsinki, Kansakoulukatu 3. The seminar is open to all.
