Star pianists and popular classic favourites for the HPO’s spring 2014 season at the Helsinki Music Centre

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s spring 2014 season at the Helsinki Music Centre comprises 32 concerts: a varied menu ranging from Beethoven symphonies and concertos to sparkling tone poems by Richard Strauss and Respighi, the uneven-numbered symphonies (1–9) by Schubert, symphonies by Shostakovich, and Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, along with rare treasures and exotic breaths of fresh air à la Jimmy López, Antón Garcia Abril, Eugen d’Albert, Alexander Zemlinsky and Nikolai Myaskovsky.

Chief Conductor John Storgårds will conduct six concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre during the spring 2014 season, and ten during the orchestra’s tour of Germany and the Netherlands in February. On the programme for Principal Guest Conductor Olari Elts are two productions with the HPO: one with the Meta4 string quartet in March and the other with celebrated Macedonian piano virtuoso Simon Trpceski in May.

In addition to visits by Dima Slobodeniouk, Jun Märklin, Alan Buribayev, Hartmut Haenchen, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Thomas Dausgaard, Olli Mustonen and Ville Matvejeff already familiar to our audiences, we are pleased to present three conductors now mounting the podium with the HPO for the first time: Russian Alexander Vedernikov, British maestro Michael Francis, and Rafael Payare, winner of the 2012 Malko International Conducting Competition and assistant to Gustavo Dudamel, from Venezuela.

Performances by pianists of the finest calibre will be a feature of all four HPO season ticket series: opening Series I in January is Leif-Ove Andsnes in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, followed by Freddy Kempf, who returns in March to play Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, and finally a long-awaited visit by Rudolf Buchbinder in May to play the first Piano Concerto by Brahms. In addition to these pianists, Series II will included Paavali Jumppanen as the soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. He will also play the same concerto in Series III. Rafael Blechacz (in the Schumann Piano Concerto) and Simon Trpceski (Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1) are the pianists in Series IV.
