According to the animal atlas research carried out by the Environment Centre between 1995 and 1998 there is a particularly diverse range of animal species in Helsinki. It shows that despite the growth of the city many habitats important for living species have been preserved.

The reptiles sighted are viper, grass snake, lizard and slowworm, and the amphibians are the newt, frog, moor frog and toad. The number of sightings were in fact even worryingly small, only the frog and lizard occurred in greater numbers than the rest.
