The social and contact work units of elderly services give advice and guidance on individual and group social work. Their tasks include also apartment renovations of old people and kin care support and support for kin carers of over 75 year olds.
Service and recreation centres
Service and recreation centres are for the pensioners and the unemployed in Helsinki. Guided hobby and recreation activities e.g. keep-fit exercises, study circles and various group activities are arranged at the centres. As a rule, the service centres are open Mon to Fri at 8-16.
Elderly rehabilitative day activities
Elderly rehabilitative day activities support living at home and coping at home despite illness and paramnesia. Day activities offer also social intercommunication and stimulating participation. These activities include breakfast, lunch, coffee, and transportation at need. You can join day activities through your local social and contact work units of elderly services.
Elderly housing and institutional services
Service housing is for persons who cannot cope with everyday life in their own homes on home care. People living at service houses have a possibility to get the services they need and they can take part in physical exercises and incentive activities of the service house. The city has both service houses of its own and service housing purchased from private producers.
Old-age home care
Old-age home care is for the aged who are in constant need of 24-hour institutional care. Institutional care covers basic treatment and both social and incentive activities. The places of elderly care in different parts of the city are available for all Helsinki residents; the previous regional divisions are extinct.
The workers of the social services together with the workers of the health centre direct the aged to service houses and old-age homes either for a short-term care period or for long-term housing and care.
