The highest decision-making body of the Helsinki City Rescue Department is the Rescue Committee. The Rescue Committee ensures that all orders and regulations that are issued with regard to the department are followed. The committee is a body which is elected by the City Council for four-year periods.
If the matters at hand concerning the Rescue Department exceed the authority of the Rescue Committee, the responsibility for the decisions is handed to the City Government or the City Council. The City Government can also, if it so desires, take up for consideration the decisions that the Committee has made.
In the City of Helsinki organisation, the Rescue Committee and the Rescue Department are sectioned under public works and environmental affairs, which are the area of responsibility of the Deputy Mayor, Pekka Sauri.
