The Vanhankaupunginkoski Rapids are located at the mouth of the River Vantaa, where Helsinki was originally established. Nearby is the Viikki nature reserve. The rapids are easy to reach by bus, walking, bike or car. The Vanhankaupunginkoski Rapids have experienced considerable changes in the past few decades. A fish ladder was built for salmon on the eastern branch in 1986. In 1999 major improvements were made. Ripples were added to the steepest part of the fish ladder and the upper and lower ends of the rapids were reshaped. It is now much easier for sea trout and salmon to swim up the rapids. Rainbow trout and some other fish can also swim up and down the rapids without problems.
