Since the early 1960s, Helsinki City Transport’s tram unit has had its own truck for dealing with emergencies. Even though Helsinki has an extremely effective rescue department, there is a need for a dedicated vehicle to ensure the smooth running of trams in a hectic city.
The rescue truck also guarantees to provide the level of technical assistance needed in the event of an accident involving a tram.
The rescue truck takes its code from the rescue department’s operative code HE 125.
It is called out whenever a serious disruption in the tram traffic occurs. This would be if the tram had derailed, the overhead cables had been damaged, the car had developed an immobilizing fault, a car was parked so as to block the tram, there had been an accident involving the tram or if the rescue department needed assistance to earth the rails.
