Trams in service are mainly Finnish articulated trams manufactured by Valmet and Strömberg (NRV I and MLNRV II). There are a total of 82 of these. There are also 40 of the newer Variotram low-floor trams, manufactured before and just after 2000.
HKL Tram is largely responsible for day-to-day maintenance and repairs of the tram fleet itself. External subcontractors are also used for tram repairs. In addition to maintenance, the trams are also updated and renovated; currently, for example, the MLNRV II series trams were fitted with low-floor central cars.
New trams are also being purchased. The first tram should be ready for test driving in the beginning of year 2013. When purchasing new trams, emphasis is placed on a long lifetime and durability in the demanding conditions of Helsinki. Trams should last over 40 years in service.
