Helsinki will promote the economic, social and environmental development of the Baltic Sea region. Helsinki will work to strengthen the position of the Baltic Sea region in the European Union. The city will strive to improve effectiveness through regional alliances.

Helsinki will cooperate with the other metropolises in the Baltic Sea region to achieve the objectives in the joint Baltic Sea policy and the EU’s Northern Dimension policy. Helsinki will participate in Northern Dimension partnership projects and pay special attention to projects that will improve cross-border transport  links and the state of the environment and counter social threats. Responding to these challenges is in the interests of everyone in the Gulf of Finland region.

EU-logoEU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

The Strategy aims at coordinating action by Member States, regions, the EU, pan-Baltic organisations, financing institutions and non-governmental bodies to promote a more balanced development of the Region. The European Commission released the new communication on the EUSBSR on Friday 23 March 2012. According to that the work will be streamlined along three objectives instead of the four pillars. The Communication is also the need of increased political commitment and alignment of policies.

The three opbjectives of the Strategy : 

  • To Save the Sea;
  • To Connect the Region; and
  • To Increase Prosperity.

Logo of BaltMetBaltic Metropoles Network

Baltic Metropoles Network (BaltMet) represents a forum for capitals and large metropolitan cities around the Baltic Sea. It brings together the cities of Berlin,  Helsinki, Malmö, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, St.Petersburg, Tallinn, Vilnius and Warsaw. The main goal of the network is to promote innovativeness and competitiveness in the Baltic Sea Region by engaging cities, as well as academic and business partners, into close cooperation. Another focus area is identity building and marketing of the Baltic Sea Region.

Baltic Development Forum (BDF)

Baltic Development Forum is an independent non-profit networking organisation with members from major cities, large companies, institutional investors and business associations in the Baltic Sea Region. BDF facilitate and develop new initiatives, partnerships and international contacts to stimulate growth, innovation and competitiveness in the Baltic Sea Region and its 11 dynamic countries. BDF seek to develop the Baltic Sea Region as a global centre of excellence and establish the Region internationally as a strong and attractive place brand.

Union of Baltic Cities (UBC)

Union of the Baltic Cities is an organisation with members in all ten countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. It aims  for democratic, economic, social, cultural and environmentally sustainable development of the Baltic Sea Region.

Helsinki-Tallinn Euregio

Helsinki-Tallinn Euregio is association of five partners: City of Helsinki, City of Tallinn, Uusimaa Regional Council, Union of Harju County Municipalities and Republic of Estonia. The mission of the Euregio is to enhance cross-border integration between Helsinki-Uusimaa region and Harju county.

Nordic Capitals

Cooperation with Nordic Capitals is important to Helsinki and city is active participant. The traditions with the cooperation are long and the first meeting was held 1923. Every other year is the Nordic Capitals meeting and other forms of meetings are finance conferences and personnel conference.
