22.07.2008 The City of Helsinki Wholesale Market now and into the future
The Wholesale Market dates back to the 18th century, when the city abattoir first opened on the edge of the Kauppatori market place. From the beginning, its aim has been to guarantee a safe and fresh supply of food to the city. In future, the Wholesale Market will increasingly specialise in good food and excellent service. Building work for new, high-quality food processing facilities is underway and mixed-use developments are springing up around the area.15 000 new inhabitants are expected at the near-by Hermanni and Sörnäistenranta alone and we are working to ensure that these new consumers too will be able to enjoy what the Wholesale Market has to offer.
