Helsinki has launched an English-language Internet site, “Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life”, to support its bid to become World Design Capital 2012. See www.designhelsinki.fi
The site presents the design sectors and the meaning of design for the citizens of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti, the five cities that participate in the Helsinki bid. The areas covered include improvements in the quality of life, city planning, city economy, and international collaboration. The site also provides a link to the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 application.
Helsinki design is introduced from a wide perspective, including architecture, interior design, urban design, sustainable design, industrial design, and communication design. The site also introduces achievements of Finnish architects and leading designers, as well as other players that have had an impact on design in Helsinki.
Helsinki is shortlisted with Eindhoven of the Netherlands to become World Design Capital 2012. The nominating organization, International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, Icsid, announces the winner in November 2009.See www.worlddesigncapital.com
