The history of the Guard Battalion begins with the Life Guard’s 3rd Finnish Sniper Battalion, founded in 1812. It was entrusted with the task of defending Helsinki and the wider empire. In the same year, Helsinki was declared Finland’s new capital city. In 2012 the Guard Battalion will be celebrating its shared two centuries-long history with the city of Helsinki.

All guard parades start from Senaatintori at 12:30, preceded by a music performance.
The parade moves from Unioninkatu to Esplanadi and the Päävartio Garrison Building. There, a change of guard will take place, followed by a music performance. Most of the guard parades go around the Esplanadi Park and through Kasarminkatu to Kasarmintori. In the alternate events indicated in parentheses, the parade continues from the Päävartio Garrison Building to the Merikasarmi Naval Barracks, the Uudenmaa Barracks or the Turku Barracks.
In the Esplanadi Park, the Espa Stage will have MILEspa concerts during the guard parade days from 14:00 onwards.
